Setting up your own business in the construction sector is not something you can do in a snap. Construction trades require specific skills, which you can acquire thanks to the initiatives, training and support structures that exist in the Brussels-Capital Region. A series of incentives are also available to make it easier to start up a business in this sector. We explain it all in this article!
Becoming self-employed in the construction sector
Construction is one of the regulated professions in Brussels. So you will have to prove that you have skills in the sector in which you intend to work (carpentry, plumbing/sanitation, roofing, structural work, etc.). Consult the Brussels Economy and Employment website to check the professional conditions and skills (FR) required for each construction speciality. This is commonly referred to as access to the profession.
You will see that access to the profession is required for activities under the following headings:
- structural work
- ceiling installation, cementing and screeding
- tiles, marble and natural stone
- roofing and waterproofing
- installation or repair of carpentry and glazing
- general carpentry
- finishings (e.g. painting)
- central heating, gas, air conditioning, sanitary facilities (plumbing)
- electrotechnical activities
- general contractor
This applies both to new activities (if you become self-employed) and to registrations of additional activities (if you add a construction-related activity to your existing activities).
Please carefully read the conditions, the possible exceptions and the steps to be taken.
Contact a business counter for specific questions regarding access to management or to the profession.
